Economic Justice for All By Mel

On August 9, 2014 in Ferguson, MO an unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed which gain national media coverage.   What goes beyond this horrific event is that economic justice has not serve minorities which furthers widen the gap of income inequality among white Americans.   Colin Gordon did a fantastic blog titled “Segregation’s Long Shadow” in which he explained, “In 2012, median black family income ($40,517) was 61.5 percent of white median income ($53,706).”   I would argue that historically that the U.S. Constitution and the legal system allowed whites to acquire wealth and power off the back of black slave labor.   Back then, the foundation was laid for whites to have better educated resources and slave laws to suppress black revolts.   I feel even the legal system back then was a major player to further enhance income inequality to blacks and later on in time to all minorities.   A good example would be the famous 1857 Dre...

A Pack of Thirsty Wolves By Mel

Dogs will always be dogs .   They are disguise in sheep’s clothing looking for their next prey and if you are a woman who does not have enough knowledge to protect yourself then you may become the next victim.   Dogs can come in many different forms.   Here are a couple of examples. ·         Wolves :   These are the type of dogs who are savages .   Very aggressive and thirsty men who will constantly ask you out even though you are not interested.   The type of man who would try to talk to you even if you are pregnant.   Beware, wolves usually run in packs and they sometimes would say insane comments on your Face Book wall or flood your timeline with immature proactive pictures.   They are very thirsty creatures. ·         Domestic dogs : These particular dogs can be loyal if fed and taken care of.   They are very friendly and in fact will be by your side t...

The Pursuit of YOUR Happiness By Mel

Will Smith played Chris Gardner ; a struggling father who was in a slow down market to sell portable bone-density scanners began to feel the effect of income inequality .   At the early stage of his marriage both him and his wife worked hard for a living but their wages were stagnated.   This cause a rift in their marriage as his wife felt that she was taking on too much financial responsibility and therefore she left him and their son.    However, Chris had a gift; he was always good at Math which prompted him to try out for a position as an intern stockbroker.   Unfortunately, this was an unpaid intern and he had to compete with 20 others to get this position.   What I admire about Chris is that he was a single father who did not receive any handouts from the government or assistance from his friends.    His struggle became his s trength which helped him to accomplish his position in the financial world today.   A man in this posi...

Shoot First, Ask Questions Later By Mel

Nasir Jones contagious hook on his God Son album, “They shooting made you look” describes the nature that some hot tempered people feel when they are pressure into a physical confrontation.   This generation gets the notion from the media that it is okay to carry a weapon for protection to use for aggression.    The Hip-Hop culture which I refer to as “Underground CNN” gives the average listener a glimpse into street life, poverty and peer pressure.   Sadly, the younger generation cannot tell facts from fiction in which the mainstream media constantly promotes ratchet behavior on a regular basis.   Boys think it is cool to be a thug and girls think it is cool to be ratchet period.   Thugs believe it is okay to hustle which means get money by any means necessary.   This mind frame attracts some selfish women who believe that as long as they are taken care of financially, they do not care who else gets hurt in the process.    No matter wha...

The Journey Continues (Part 3) By Mel

My plan for the future is to continue to promote positive single fathers in my community and beyond.   I believe that the majority of the public would like a positive picture on fathers in today’s society.   I will also begin to set-up even more meetings during the summer and hopefully I will gain better progress.   Part of these meetings is to come up with some solutions for single active fathers.   Discuss ways to spend more time with their children, how to obtain governmental assistance and job training to better opportunities which will help them raise their child in a better environment.   I will continue to post blogs on single positive fathers and use social media to bring this discussion to the forefront.   I will continue to go to social functions and encourage people to check out my blog or to come to one of my schedule meetings.   Maybe arrange for us single fathers to have a day we all spend time with our children and do engaging acti...

The Journey Continues (Part Two) By Mel

What I learned from this journey is that single fathers go through the same struggle as single mothers but we are not treated the same.   I mentioned in my blog that some women feel that they do not need a positive father in their child’s life and their nurturing skills alone are enough to raise a child.   Not true, in fact according to a study done by the U.S. Department of Education, “An active and nurturing style of fathering is associated with better verbal skills, intellectual functioning, and academic achievement among adolescents.”   The majority of us are portrayed in the media as dead beat dads.   Not true, in fact from my own experience I worked two part-time jobs, arrange for family members to care for her while I was at work because ‘Care for Kids’ was getting pretty expensive.   The media rarely report positive single fathers working 7 days a week with no days off, struggling to make ends meet.   Most of us single fathers are sometimes af...

The Journey Continues (Part One) By Mel

This was a very challenging project to do because I feel society in general allow single mothers to have more governmental assistance and support than single fathers.   The first thing I decided to do was to post a few blogs on mymajicpen.com to arrange a couple of meetings for my project based on how single fathers raise their children.   This arrangement was made for residential and non-residential fathers to discuss what they are going through.   A great friend of mine who I met through theater had some experience with creating flyers.   We exchange contact information and he made a few flyers for me that I’d post around Middletown.   This method I understand is the old school way of marketing as well as word of mouth to get active single fathers to attend my upcoming meeting.   The various outlets I went to such as “The Russell,” located in Hartford and “Cloud Nine” allowed me to share more information about my upcoming event.   The reason why...
