Income Inequality Towards Women By Mel

One of my favorite shows on TV, “Boardwalk Empire,” which was broadcast on HBO, shows examples of wealth and inequality towards women.  The series is set during the Prohibition period of the 1930s.  Most women accepted their financial status low compared to their male counterparts.   However, some women’s suffrage groups urged Congress to pass legislation to support equal pay.  Fast forward to 2015, women play a critical role in the workforce today but they still do not reap the rewards as men today.  Ana Radelat mentioned in her article, “Connecticut women victims of pay gap” that “According to 2012 Census figures, the median annual salary, for all occupations for a man in Connecticut was $47,887, while a woman earned $37,483.”  Wealth remains concentrated and rigidly locked in the hands of men due to wealth and politics.  This generation has single mothers carrying the burden to support their families.  For example, a single mother w...

These days some women by pass the millennium gentlemen and gravitate towards ungrateful men for a variety of reasons.  Some women make the mathematical mistake thinking quantity not quality determines a strong relationship .  For example, smart woman stays with ungrateful man because they have been in a relationship since high school but she disregards the fact of his constant cheating, manipulating ways and controlling demeanor over the years.  Relationships are not perfect; however someone who loves you would appreciate your value and not deliberately hurt or hinder your growth.  Here are some quick signs that you are wasting your time. 1.      Mind games (clap on, clap off, the clapper) Have you ever notice that one moment he shows you positive attention then in a blink of an eye he completely ignores you?  This vicious cycle is done purposely to make you feel that you have to pour more energy into the relationship.  Th...

Power Controls Everything By Mel

Power is defined as, the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events .   Wealth, power and politics have always been intertwined by some Whites to keep Blacks and other minorities from living a comfortable life.   Reverend Doctor John L. Selders, Jr. an ordained minister, who serves the United Church of Christ, has a great understanding of institutionalized power holders.   Black lives truly matter.   However, sometimes systemically that is not always the case.   That fateful encounter of Officer Darren Wilson who fatally shot unarmed teenager Michal Brown changed Bishop John Selders, Jr.’s life.   When the grand jury decided not to indict Wilson in the shooting death of Michal Brown a strong sense of racial cohesion among Blacks and Browns was encourage to resist police brutality.   Bishop John Selders, Jr. argued that the Second Amendment should be eliminated completely and no one should have the r...

Hip-Hop Music Always Gets A Bad Rap By Mel

Hip-Hop music is a positive influence and educational in today’s generation.   Despite the negative comments from critics, Hip-Hop has a positive vibe that links a connection with the community and is marketed in an optimistic way towards today’s youth.    To many, Hip-Hop is an inspiration and motivation to overcome life’s obstacles.   One great example on how Hip-Hop uplifts the community is Urban Art Beat NYC/ The Positive Pulse of Youth Education which is located in South Bronx NY.   According to Urban Art Beat NYV over 67% of the students remain in the program for 2 or more seasons compared to 47% average retention rate for NYC public school’s minority youth.   What’s unique is that this form of music associates itself with all genres of music which is relatable to all walks of life. ·         Hip-Hop music creates jobs ·         Educates the youth on street and book ...

Economic Justice for All By Mel

On August 9, 2014 in Ferguson, MO an unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed which gain national media coverage.   What goes beyond this horrific event is that economic justice has not serve minorities which furthers widen the gap of income inequality among white Americans.   Colin Gordon did a fantastic blog titled “Segregation’s Long Shadow” in which he explained, “In 2012, median black family income ($40,517) was 61.5 percent of white median income ($53,706).”   I would argue that historically that the U.S. Constitution and the legal system allowed whites to acquire wealth and power off the back of black slave labor.   Back then, the foundation was laid for whites to have better educated resources and slave laws to suppress black revolts.   I feel even the legal system back then was a major player to further enhance income inequality to blacks and later on in time to all minorities.   A good example would be the famous 1857 Dre...

Dogs will always be dogs .   They are disguise in sheep’s clothing looking for their next prey and if you are a woman who does not have enough knowledge to protect yourself then you may become the next victim.   Dogs can come in many different forms.   Here are a couple of examples. ·         Wolves :   These are the type of dogs who are savages .   Very aggressive and thirsty men who will constantly ask you out even though you are not interested.   The type of man who would try to talk to you even if you are pregnant.   Beware, wolves usually run in packs and they sometimes would say insane comments on your Face Book wall or flood your timeline with immature proactive pictures.   They are very thirsty creatures. ·         Domestic dogs : These particular dogs can be loyal if fed and taken care of.   They are very friendly and in fact will be by your side t...

The Pursuit of YOUR Happiness By Mel

Will Smith played Chris Gardner ; a struggling father who was in a slow down market to sell portable bone-density scanners began to feel the effect of income inequality .   At the early stage of his marriage both him and his wife worked hard for a living but their wages were stagnated.   This cause a rift in their marriage as his wife felt that she was taking on too much financial responsibility and therefore she left him and their son.    However, Chris had a gift; he was always good at Math which prompted him to try out for a position as an intern stockbroker.   Unfortunately, this was an unpaid intern and he had to compete with 20 others to get this position.   What I admire about Chris is that he was a single father who did not receive any handouts from the government or assistance from his friends.    His struggle became his s trength which helped him to accomplish his position in the financial world today.   A man in this posi...
